Mars Topographic Hemisphere Globes

The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter, or MOLA, is an instrument on the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), a spacecraft that was launched on November 7, 1996. The mission of MGS was to orbit Mars, and map it over the course of approximately 3 years, which it did sucessfully, completing 4 1/2 years of mapping. Olympus Mons, on the left, is the largest known volcano in the solar system, about the size of the State of Arizona. Hellas Plantitia on the right is one of the largest impact craters in the solar system, about 1,400 miles in diameter and dating from about 4 billion years ago.
